About the Craft HISTORY OF FIROZABAD GLASS In 800 B.C., during the time of Yajur Veda, glass was one of the articles from which female ornaments were made. It is evident from the archaeological findings at Basti, Hastinapur (Uttar Pradesh) that glassware found in the region is about 2000 years old. Moving forward, nestled on the banks of the sacred River Yamuna, Firozabad is steeped in history. Its glass-making tradition dates back over three centuries, tracing its origins to the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar who established a glass factory in the region sometime back in the 16th century. The exquisite glassware produced in Firozabad adorned the courts of royalty, embodying elegance and opulence. Till this day and age, the craftsmen are called kanchhkar. The fact that the skill of glass making is passed down generations is why we feel good about getting our hands on a piece of art that is authentic. The kanchhkars are highly skilled in creating items like bangles, lamps, chandeliers, vases, bowls, candle holders, figurines, and decorative items. These glass items are popular for their intricate designs, vibrant colours, and exquisite craftsmanship. HOW IT IS CRAFTED To witness the art of glass making in Firozabad is to witness a centuries-old craft being practiced with unwavering dedication.  Raw Materials : Soda ash and Silica Sand are the main raw materials used for producing glass. Colouring : The colouring of products is done by either using coloured glass or applying colours to the top/upper crest of the Glass. The glassware handicrafts are Made by using unique mouth blown technique, a rare form of blowing air through a glass pipe to provide required shape, reflecting perfect craftsmanship of artisans based in Firozabad. Glass cut gems are shaped and applied to the base material, creating an exquisite masterpiece that is loved by buyers across the world.
