About the Craft HISTORY OF PIPLI APPLIQUE The Pipli Applique work of Orissa originated in the Pipli of Puri district, and owes its origin to the culture of Lord Jagannath during the 12th century, when the temple of Lord Jagannath was built at Puri (in 1135 A.D). At present there are about 15,000 artisans in the Puri and Khordha districts who depend on the applique craft for their livelihoods. Sixty per cent of them are women. Due to the ramifications of covid, which saw all craft melas in the state banned, the fate of a large number of these craft-persons is at stake. Orregin’s mission is to showcase the artisans beautiful products, so that conscious consumers across the world can buy a piece of artistic beauty to adorn their homes. HOW IT IS CRAFTED The word Appliqué comes from the French word meaning ‘to put on’, where shapes of flowers, etc., are cut out and stitched on to the main fabric surface. The coloured clothes are stitched in shape of animals, birds, flowers and beautiful walls on the base cloth to produce variety of decorative products.  This artistic work is as old as the Lord Jagannath Temple of Puri and is an opulent artistic heritage of the country that draws specimens from the temple architecture. The artistic skill of the artisans when combined with different distinguished stitches practiced on plethora of beautiful motifs give rise to this unique product.  At present, the artisans are producing products like wall hangings, cushions, bed sheets, umbrellas, bags and so forth. This handicraft is unparalleled in its flexibility and versatility, permitting experimentation and encouraging innovation. Artisans with their skilful blending of myths, symbolism and imagination provide the craft an appealing dynamism.
